Integrating Vocabulary in the Science Classroom

I recently attended the Interface B conference in Tan-Tar-A.  One of the breakout sessions I attended involved incorporating a method of integrating new vocabulary in the science classroom.

The 5-S method allows the students to develop their own understanding of new vocabulary by following a set of guidelines that pushes the students to analyze the text they are reading.  It is necessary that students be able to do this in the science classroom because there is some information that might be too difficult teach using hands-on methods.

The 5-S model calls for students to answer the following questions:

  • Structure: Preview the text
  • Speaker: Author’s point of view
  • Situation: What is the main idea?
  • Shifts: Where does the text make changes?
  • Summary Statements

The important point from this session is the importance for science teachers to do their part for improving literacy in all fields.  I am very anxious to get an opportunity to implement this method into my instruction to see if I can bolster their science literacy and hopefully their overall literacy.
