Recharging & Refocusing Through Rounds

I really enjoyed participating in Instructional Rounds last week. It gave me a chance to see what is happening around the building, learn of the great instructional strategies teachers are using, and observe some of my students in a different setting.

Throughout the day I often wonder what goes on in other classrooms, sometimes it is not easy to try and think of new things to do so that the students will find learning fun and enjoyable. Therefore getting out and seeing what other teachers are doing is refreshing. I witnessed a class where students were working at their own pace and once they finished their assignment they would join together for a round circle discussion. I was amazed to watch the students behave as adults during the discussion; they were taking turns talking and sharing their reflections on what they had just learned. It was neat to see a group of 6th graders (after lunch) staying so focused on learning.

I was also impressed with the great classroom management skills throughout the building. Every classroom I walked in to, the students were following the expectations and definitely knew the procedures.  Not only were the students following the expectations but I could tell that each teacher had good rapport with the students. Teachers are building relationships with the students by laughing and talking with them, therefore this is making learning enjoyable for the students.

I think we should continue to do faculty rounds because not only are we able to get good ideas from our co-workers but it allows us to recharge our batteries and dares us to try something new.
