Reflections on the Digits Instructional Workshop

The new math department was treated to a training session on how to use and implement with fidelity the Digits program that the middle school uses for math. My exposure to Digits was very limited in the last five years to seeing only the student side if the program. This training session was an eye opener I think for all of us attending. Since most of us are new teachers, this was also a fantastic opportunity for this new department to collaborate and bond.

There were three definite items in training that I feel I will be able implement in my classroom this year. The first being, the use of Digits Dash program, which takes the paper book and makes it all digital on the student's iPad. Dash will allow the teacher to immediately view student work, display student work for others to see, and to chat with a student when needed. The second item from training is the ability to modify assignments to the learner's skill set. I feel this will be of great use in collaboration with a student's IEP, because I can share the rates of progress with their caseworker and parent. The final component of Digits that I am excited to implement in my class is the creation of assignments with my own questions through the online program. This instructional resource will be helpful in aligning assignments and assessments in the Digits program to our schools standards-based learning system.

This has been an amazing start to a new school year and this training created excitement and anticipation to get started with Digits this week.
