From Construction Site to Community

What are data teams? That is the first thought that came to mind prior to attending training on Monday. This training was a great opportunity to help me understand the “what” and “how” of data teams.

During a visioning activity in the morning our school team was asked to select a metaphor that best described our school right now. We decided our building is a like a construction site where many things are going on, but all work toward supporting student learning. That continues to be our goal as a building with the tracking of student data. We collect and monitor our assessment data which is the first step for each department. Data in hand, it’s time for action and we become the data teams.

Our vision as a school is using data to improve our teaching and to increase levels of student learning. The first day of training started with team building. Our goal was to understand that among each team we have many different personalities and approaches to projects. As teachers we understand that everyone has unique classroom procedures. The purpose was to learn how different personalities can take action, work together and achieve shared goals.

The afternoon session started with a needs assessment for our building seeking to measure the effectiveness of departmental collaboration. We came to the conclusion that we do a really good job collecting data, but still struggle with action steps. An area for growth is analyzing the data we collect and using it to help our department and our students improve learning outcomes.

Revisiting the metaphor of school as a construction site, we are always adding and changing strategies to benefit students. This process will never end. Everything we do is done with the intent of supporting and improving the learning environment for students and staff.
