EdCampKC: A Reflection by @MaryDiGirlamo

This was my first time attending Ed Camp. I was excited because I have always heard good things about it and now I can see why people enjoy attending this event.  I attended four sessions but the one that I got the most out of was Critical Thinking.

During this collaboration many educators shared great ideas that they use in their classrooms. They mentioned reaching out to experts of a specific field that relates to the topic your students are learning about. For example, if you are teaching about animals then Skype with a zookeeper.  Why should we limit learning within our four walls? I realize that is how it will be almost every day but instead change it up and allow students to connect their learning with the real world. Every now and then give students the experience of collaborating not only with each other but with other classrooms around the school and the world.

The idea that I definitely want to try in my classroom was a critical thinking strategy. The students would create a slide at the same time about a specific topic. They would put it in a news headline format after reading about the topic and pick out important information about that topic and add pictures. After they are finished they would send it to me and I could put all of the slides together.  As a class we can scroll through the headlines together. Students can work with partners or individually.

Another strategy I would like to try in class is to come up with pictures of a specific topic and the kids have to guess what event the picture is portraying. I think this strategy would be a great formative assessment to use in class. I am really glad that I attended Ed Camp; I learned so many great ideas from other educators that I can start using in my classroom.
