EdCampKC: A Reflection by @valstaponski

Nervous is how I felt going into my first ever Edcamp. I wasn’t really sure what to expect and how many people were going to be there. Would I be able to understand anything that was talked about? WOW, is what I kept saying to myself when it was all over. My head is still spinning with the amount of information acquired during EdcampKC.

There were four sessions and I tweeted out more than I ever thought that would or could (check them out--Mr. Hubbuch created a Storify with them). There are several things that I want to start implementing in my classroom, but I’ve decided that I need to just start with one and work from there. The one thing I want to implement right away is sharing information about mastery of the standards with my students.

I was sitting in my first classroom on Saturday and noticed a wall that was dedicated to reporting progress on content standards and overall class data. That classroom teacher shows the percentage of students for each class period and their different “checkpoints”, which would be our standards. There is also an overall report of student progress reported. I took a picture and tweeted out what a great idea this was. It is going to take a little work to get this set up, but can’t wait to start showing the progress that each class is making from their pre-assessment data to the summative data. I think when students see this information it will make a significant impact on their effort and learning.
